| The project "Healthy Milk for the Sahel" is a collaboration between the Sahel Institute and the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Bamako (Mali) and the Swiss Tropical Institute and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Switzerland). The project was financed jointly by the Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (NF 3270-059493.99). The objectives of the project are: - To describe and analyse the traditional methods of milk production, transformation and commercialisation of cow, goat, and camel milk
- To evaluate the risks of raw milk and milk products with special emphasis on zoonoses such as bovine tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis and brucellosis (Brucella spp.)
- Develop and test techniques for milk transformation and conservation to increase its nutritional contents and minimise risks for the consumer
The project has been carrying out its activities for more than three years. Main results have already been published in scientific journals ( articles) and during two workshops hold in Mali in 2002 and 2003.
